Make Medication Consideration a Part of Pre-Pregnancy Planning, Part I

Posted by Paxil and PPHN Editor @ 7:32 AM, Thursday Aug 7th, 2008

If you have decided to become pregnant in the near future then you know there are many things to consider. For women, much of this consideration centers around the actual act of getting pregnant and they set to work calculating their monthly cycle, their ovulation, and their prime days of fertility – even months ahead of when they are thinking of beginning to try to become pregnant. Additionally, there are trips to the doctor for an overall check up, blood work, and the procurement of all the necessary vitamins that are known to help support a healthy pregnancy. And, of course, women also begin the process of removing those things from their life that they know to be outlawed during pregnancy – smoking, drinking, shellfish, unpasteurized cheeses (and whatever else happens to be on the list at the moment).

But what very often goes to the wayside in this pre-pregnancy planning is the examination of the medications that the woman is currently taking and if, in fact, they are still recommended during pregnancy.

For those who suffer from depression and some anxiety related disorders, the SSRI antidepressant family of drugs has been enormously helpful in curtailing symptoms. Millions of people take such medications every day including Paxil® - one of the most effective drugs of its kind. In most instances, in fact, Paxil® is incredibly safe and can effectively go about doing its job without side effects.

But few women may know that Paxil® and some SSRIs like are not indicated for pregnancy because of their connection with a condition known as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). As Paxil® attorneys in California – who work with many families affected by this condition – will tell you, Paxil® has been shown to have a six-fold increase in the possibility of PPHN when it is taken during pregnancy.

In the next post, we’ll continue to discuss Paxil® and PPHN and why it is so important to take medication into consideration when planning a pregnancy.
