PPHN Can Blindside New Parents

Posted by Paxil and PPHN Editor @ 5:59 PM, Sunday Aug 17th, 2008

As parents we simply cannot conceive of our children being sick. In our mind’s eye we picture them always healthy and always happy; and it is our greatest wish that they remain that way throughout their lives. That’s why an illness suffered by a child is so devastating for parents – and can catch them so off guard; especially when that illness affects a newborn baby.

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn – PPHN – is a disease that affects newborn babies. When a child is first born, their arteries expand so that blood can flow to and from the lungs and through the organs of the body. Before birth these arteries are constricted as the baby is receiving all its oxygen and nutrients from its mother through the umbilical cord.

With PPHN, however, a baby’s arteries never expand even after birth; they remain constricted and blood cannot flow to the lungs. So all of the important oxygenation process that supports a healthy respiratory system is compromised.

PPHN can be devastating for a family and can certainly blindside parents who had no knowledge that their child would have health problems this early in their life. But even more terrifying is the causes of PPHN; one of which can be the taking of Paxil® during pregnancy. While Paxil® is a commonly used drug – millions of people around the world use Paxil® to treat depression and anxiety every year – it has been shown to be dangerous for women who are pregnant. In fact, those who take Paxil® during their pregnancies have an overall six-fold increase in the possibility of giving birth to a child with PPHN.

While dealing with PPHN can be enormously alarming for parents, Paxil® attorneys in California can help them deal with the unexpected and find their bearing in this topsy turvy world.
