PPHN Knows No Boundaries in Terms of Victims

Posted by Paxil and PPHN Editor @ 8:30 PM, Wednesday Aug 20th, 2008

It seems absolutely ridiculous – and completely against nature – that any serious disease would affect a newborn baby. When a child comes into the world it should only be a joyous time in everyone’s life; the fact that disease would befall someone who has barely lived seems ludicrous in the minds of all involved, especially the child’s parents. But such diseases do exist and when they strike they render all those who are connected to the child dumbfounded. Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) for example, is one disease that most people have never heard of, let alone had to suffer through; but the fact of the matter is that it does exist and one of its causes can be avoided if only pregnant women had all the information they needed to make educated decisions.

PPHN is a disease that only affects newborns. In children with PPHN, their arteries that would otherwise open following their birth to receive adequate blood flow to and from the lungs do not function as they should. Essentially in those children with PPHN arteries are constricted and regular blood flow is not attainable, thus significantly reducing the amount of oxygen is delivered throughout the body and leaving the baby vulnerable to respiratory failure and a host of other conditions. Those who are born with PPHN are immediately subjected to invasive medical procedures to reverse the results of the condition. And while medical science has been able to help children with PPHN in some cases it would only make sense that this condition should be avoided altogether.

One of the ways in which PPHN can be avoided is through the avoidance of Paxil® and other SSRI-antidepressants during pregnancy. It has been shown through comprehensive medical research that the taking of these drugs can greatly increase a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with PPHN. The research is out there but it seems to be inadequately reaching its intended audience.

Paxil® attorneys in California work with those who have had children with PPHN as a result of their Paxil® use during pregnancy – helping them to receive financial restitution and – more importantly – helping to shed light on this serious issue.
