PPPH Becomes More Prevalent with Paxil® Use
Category: PPHN
There some medications that have grown in popularity year to year. It’s not because these medications are the new “fad” or are somehow able to deliver us something unexpected (instant weight loss, more hair, etc.); it’s often because they are deliver us from something that would otherwise take over our lives. Depression and anxiety, for instance, are things that progressively make it difficult for sufferers to make it in the world on a day to day basis. The new family of medications that have helped alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety have been enormously helpful in allowing sufferers to take control back in their lives. Paxil®, most especially, has been a phenomenally effective medication that can control symptoms – often with little to no side effects to users. Under most circumstances, that is.
Unfortunately it was discovered some time back that the taking of Paxil® during pregnancy results in a six fold increase in the prevalence of a condition known as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn. PPHN, as it is most often referred to, increases exponentially with the continued taking of Paxil® by women during their pregnancies. What the medical community and pharmaceutical companies have failed to impart to pregnant women – or those who are planning on soon becoming pregnant – is just how serious a link this is and how important it is for women to carefully consider the pros and cons of continuing with Paxil® during their pregnancy.
PPHN essentially stops blood from flowing as it normally would in a newborn baby. The minute they are born, a baby’s arteries expand so that they can receive the blood flow that has been absent in the womb. This blood flow is what oxygenates the blood and delivers oxygen to the rest of the body. With PPHN, however, the arteries do not expand and blood is not able to reach the lungs as it should. The results can be devastating for families.
